Description
A 30 year old Caol Ila whisky. Bottled by Morrison & MacKay, as part of their Càrn Mòr Celebration of the Cask series. Distilled on 16th April 1979, it was then aged in a Hogshead cask number 4603, before being bottled on 8th September 2009. A run of just 234 bottles, this is bottle number 194.
Colour: pale gold.
Nose:
Right, once the tangerines, the kippers and the straight peat smoke join in the dancing you cannot be mistaken anymore. Very great nose. So, with water: absolutely superb, in the style of the ‘older old Caol Ilas’. There are whiffs of wool, hay, damp newspapers, creosote, some seawater, walnut wine, more fresh paint
Taste:
It’s a tar bomb. Heavy tar candy notes with a bit of leather, and a big helping of salty peat. Faint grassy/flower petal notes in the back, but tar and clean oak are the main components. Lovely! It’s not quite as coal-y as Caol Ila can sometimes be, but peat there is a plenty to be sure.
Finish:
Is long cigars, ash, tar, sea salt. Yep, lots of cigar ash in the finish. With water it becomes quite drying and oaky, but not in a bad way at all. Old chalk, sal-ammoniac, and again that waxy flower petal thing.
As with all our older bottles, there may be some slight damage to the labels / box. Please see the pictures.
