Description

A 28 year old Glenury Royal whisky. Bottled by Gordon & MacPhail as part of their Rare Old series – A snapshot in time, each release from the Rare Old range serves as a reminder of Scotland’s rich distilling heritage, showcasing whisky from forgotten stills. A bygone era bottled, that were released by Gordon & MacPhail between 2012 and 2018. This Glenury Royal was distilled in 1984, it was then cask aged for 28 years and bottled on 26.10.2012. A limited edtion run of just 430 bottles.

The distillery was founded by Robert Barclay in 1825, taking its name from the glen that runs through the Ury district. Weeks after opening, a fire destroyed stocks of barley, along with the kiln and parts of the malting floor. Two weeks after the fire, worker James Clark died in an accident with the boiler. Robert Barclay died in 1854, and the distillery was auctioned to William Richie three years later. The maltings of Glenury Royal were closed in 1968. The distillery then kept producing malt whisky for almost two more decades, but eventually it was mothballed in May 1985. In 1992 the owners decided to cease the malt whisky production at Glenury Royal for good. The buildings of the distillery were sold in 1993 to a property company who turned part of these buildings into apartments.

Colour: pale gold.

Nose:
Whiffs of old toolboxes and copper coins, these notes of old leather jacket, this unusual blend of patchouli and mint tea, and above everything, this feeling of having just opened a 25-box of fine Cuban cigars. And then we have a little ham and perhaps even mutton suet.

Taste:
Rather more on anything from a beehive for a start, getting then rather orangey and orange-blossomy, and then more herbal, in a very complex way. Leek and chives, lovage, perhaps even a very wee touch of garlic. And then the sweeter, rounder notes do come back, with orange blossom honey and a wee bit of fig.

Finish:
Medium long, complex, rather cigary again, but there’s quite a lot of earl grey tea in the aftertaste. Touches of juniper and cumin too.

As with all our older bottles, there may be some slight damage to the labels / box.  Please see the pictures.
